DECEMBER DESTINATIONS - 5 CLASSIC WINTER DESTINATIONS IN INDIA

The long-awaited winter has arrived, and cold winds are sweeping across the country's northern regions. Now is the time to pack your bags and travel to some of India's most popular destinations, which completely change in character during these months. While snow blankets hill stations like Manali and Shimla, providing visitors with opportunities to participate in winter sports, the normally warm Kerala, Rajasthan, and Goa cool down, providing visitors with ideal conditions to explore these locales. It goes without saying that this is when the entire world decides to visit these locations, and you should book well in advance.

Goa

From a plethora of beach shacks to swanky fine-dining restaurants and flea markets, all conveniently located near the evergreen vacationer's paradise's sandy stretches, Goa's distinct charm never fades. Hippies, backpackers, couples looking for a romantic getaway, litterateurs, and thrill seekers all flock to Goa, which truly has something for everyone! Age-old cathedrals harkening back to the state's colonial past; a vast expanse of forested hinterland; a thriving food and music scene; and, of course, the carnivalesque atmosphere at the numerous beaches; Goa's contrasts and diversity of experiences ensure that there is no room for boredom here. The sea is still lukewarm during the winter, and the harshness of the sun fades with the arrival of December. There is no better time to visit!

  Manali

Want to go to the Indian equivalent of Yash Raj's lavish Swiss film locations? Look no further than Himachal Pradesh, where the dreamy hill station Manali reigns supreme. The town and its neighboring locales of Kullu and Solang are also popular with Indian filmmakers, offering a veritable kaleidoscope of the mighty snow-covered Dhauladhar peaks, gurgling rivers, apple orchards, and age-old temples. Solang is also one of the best places in the country to learn to ski or go sledding. While adrenaline junkies can get their kicks hurtling down snow-covered hillsides, foodies can savor delectable local fare at the city's numerous street stalls.

 Shimla

Shimla, surrounded by snow-covered pine and deodar trees, reveals its best side during the winter months. Despite the fact that the city's popular Mall Road area has become increasingly chaotic, Shimla's beauty remains for those who seek it. Shoppers, on the other hand, will find their makka at the Mall, where they can stock up on exotic spices, woollens, handicrafts, fabric, and other souvenirs. As in other vacation destinations, don't be afraid to haggle for the best deals! Those looking for an action-packed vacation can choose from paragliding, ice skating, and trekking—there are a number of adventure tour operators in the main town area that cater to thrill-seekers. Those looking for nothing more than a little rejuvenation can opt for some peace and quiet, stay at one of the town's luxury resorts.

 Jaisalmer

There is no better time to visit Rajasthan than during the winter when the Thar cools significantly. Jaisalmer, despite its remote location, has retained its charm and popularity and is one of Rajasthan's most popular tourist destinations. There's plenty to see and explore in the city, with impressive forts and immaculately maintained historical sites that echo its rich history. Further afield, those interested in visiting the dunes can do so on camelback for safaris that usually end with a local musical performance and dinner under the stars. There's also plenty to shop for—the most popular purchases for visitors are local artifacts and traditional clothing. If you plan ahead of time, you'll arrive just in time for the vibrant Desert Festival—there's no better time to visit this exceptional city.

 Kerala

Kerala's popularity has grown in recent years, thanks to its complex network of backwaters and beautiful coconut groves. Once the exclusive domain of high-end travelers, a slew of new budget hotels and low-cost lodging options have opened up the state to an entirely new demographic of visitors. Kerala is still relatively expensive; however, there is no better time than the winter to blow your vacation budget and visit God's Own Country.
